Former Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama has passed on, Hospital sources at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) said today.

Alhaji Mahama, Vice President to Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, passed on at the KBTH at 0945 at the age of 66.

The Chief Executive of the Hospital Professor Nii Otu Nartey told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), that Alhaji Mahama who was on admission at the Cardiothoracic Centre  had been on the Intensive Care Unit until his death.

Hospital sources had earlier denied his death when news went round about his demise on Wednesday, November 14, 2012.


Vice President Mahama was born on March 3, 1946 at Yendi and schooled at the Tamale Secondary School for his secondary education, from where he proceeded to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)  where he graduated as a Building Technology Engineer.

He had since practiced his profession in various capacities in various regions of the country until he teamed up with Former President Kuffuor to win elections on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the year 2000.

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, Mr Harunah Iddrisu, Minister of Communications, the Chief of Staff, Mr Henry Martey Newman, as well as the head of the Dagomba community in Accra were among those who arrived at the hospital shortly after his death was confirmed.

Mr Iddrisu, speaking to the media at the Hospital, expressed regret at the passing of the former Vice President. He said the former vice president served his nation well.

He said burial arrangements would be announced after consultation with the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama’s family and others.
The family currently at the hospital is yet to take a decision on his burial and formal funeral activities.
